Young Economists’ Essay Awards

The purpose of the Young Economists' Essay Awards (YEEA) is to encourage young researchers to participate in the conference. The awards are given for exceptionally innovative and high-level papers written by researchers who

  • are under the age of 35
  • have completed their PhD less than 5 years ago.

For papers with multiple authors each author should satisfy both criteria.

Each year, one of the YEEAs is dedicated to the late Paul Geroski for the paper that makes the most significant policy contribution.

The winners in this year's YEEA competition are:

  • Javier Donna (Ohio State University) and José-Antonio Espín-Sánchez (Northwestern University), with the paper "COMPLEMENTS AND SUBSTITUTES IN SEQUENTIAL AUCTIONS: THE CASE OF WATER AUCTIONS";
  • Kathleen Nosal (University of Mannheim), with the paper "ESTIMATING SWITCHING COSTS FOR MEDICARE ADVANTAGE PLANS" (7th EARIE Paul Geroski Prize for the most significant policy contribution);
  • Andrew Rhodes (University of Oxford), with the paper "RE-EXAMINING THE EFFECTS OF SWITCHING COSTS";
  • Sebastian Schwenen (European University Institute), with the paper "STRATEGIC BIDDING IN MULTIUNIT AUCTIONS WITH CAPACITY CONSTRAINED BIDDERS: THE NEW YORK CAPACITY MARKET".

The selection committee this year included John Asker, Luis Cabral, Liran Einav, Rob Porter, Patrick Rey, Yossi Spiegel and Tommaso Valletti.

The award, including a prize of 1,000 Euros, will be awarded during the gala dinner on the first evening of the conference, Sept 2.
